Carl C Williams is nothing if not West Texas to the core. He was born in Marfa, spent his formative years in Presidio, Marfa, Alpine and Fabens, then served 30-plus years in law enforcement. Along the way, he developed photography skills, mastering painstaking, even artistic, techniques – now almost obsolete -- required in the darkroom.
He was the photographer for the Fabens High School yearbook, then the official Sul Ross College photographer (1951-1955).
Williams placed numerous images and writings in various publications -- The Sage, The Brand and The Skyline,
as well area newspapers, even Modern Photography Magazine. While stationed in Van Horn he was a stringer,
contributing mostly photographs for the El Paso Times. Some of his photography appear in “ Images of America – Alpine “
by David W. Keller, “ Lone Star General – Hiram B. Granbury “ by Rebecca Blackwell Drake and Thomas Holder, and others.
As a member of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education, he prepared training pamphlets and lesson plans in Narcotics, Civil Process Service and Law Enforcement Photography, and taught in numerous Police/Sheriff/Council of Governments academies. He has taught at numerous colleges across the state, including the Fire School at Texas A&M. As an active Boy Scout leader, and Eagle Scout, he received many BSA awards.
He served in the Texas State Guard retiring as a Colonel, while serving he receiving several awards and commendations. With his wife Alice, they once owned and operated MARC Camera Center, Inc., MARCS Photography Training Center,
and MARC Photography, a full-service studio and processing plant. Reared in the Trans-Pecos, Williams acquired
a keen interest in its history, accumulating a large collection of photographs to illustrate his life. At present the former
Sheriff has finished working on his first book, a historical record of lawmen of Brewster County, Texas, a comprehensive research, which also will includes his long-awaited memoirs of his life’s episodes just north of the Rio Grande,
is entitled “More than a Badge – Rough Country, the Law & Me.”
